7.24 [TEACHING] Surprises in the Text (wk 3): What’s With Babel?
Monday Jul 25, 2022
Monday Jul 25, 2022
What is really going on in the story that seemingly signals the beginning of differing languages and the migration of civilization? In Genesis 11, we hear about the tower of babel and are left with the question: what is this about? Is it simply a story told out of order or is there a deeper lesson to be learned?
Sean Palmer explores these questions and more as he joins us via video from Houston, Texas. He is the teaching pastor at Ecclesia Houston and is the author of Unarmed Empire. He's also a contributing writer to The Voice Bible and serves as the vice-chair of the Missio Alliance board.

7.17 [PRACTICE] Surprises in the Text (wk 2 part 2): Seeing Liturgy
Monday Jul 18, 2022
Monday Jul 18, 2022
After the teaching, in which we talked about Mark 8 and stages of faith, we engaged in a practice that contained prayer, reflection, and song to help us open ourselves to movement and growth in our own faith journeys. To hear Mike Goldsworthy's full teaching that led up to this practice, check out the last episode of this podcast.
You can follow along with Mariah, our Director of Art and Worship, and Amina, a SBCC community member, as they guide us through this progression with this transcript.

7.17 [TEACHING] Surprises in the Text (wk 2 part 1): Seeing, but Not Clearly
Monday Jul 18, 2022
Monday Jul 18, 2022
Sometimes in our faith journey we need to see, but not clearly before our eyes can be opened to see clearly and in focus. Like the blind man who experiences a two part healing in Mark 8, our faith often progresses through stages that grow and expand. And the places where we have grown from were often necessary pieces to help bring us to where we are today. Part 2 of this gathering is a practice that helped us open ourselves up to this movement in our own faith journeys and it can be found as a separate episode.
Today’s teaching comes from Mike Goldsworthy, long time friend of SBCC. Mike is a speaker, resourcer, and guide with a passion for connecting like-minded churches and leaders. He also has a podcast, space for faith: re-imaginging the church for our current moment, and started the Post-Evangelical Collective which met here at SBCC last fall.

7.10 [REFLECTION] Faithfulness Liturgy
Thursday Jul 14, 2022
Thursday Jul 14, 2022
To start our gatherings this weekend, we centered ourselves on the faithfulness of God. While we recognize that there's a wide variety of experiences and feelings that come up when the "faithfulness of God" is mentioned, we hope to see goodness and faithfulness manifest in our lives and in the life of our community.

7.10 [TEACHING] Surprises In the Text (wk. 1): Receiving The Gift of Limits
Monday Jul 11, 2022
Monday Jul 11, 2022
Mike Goldsworthy - Perhaps the American success ethos that drives us to do more, achieve more and work harder as we defy our limits is actually not the best way to live. And perhaps there is a gift and a unique grace that we receive in the recognition, embrace and acceptance of our limits. We look at this through the lens of Hebrews 2:14-15, Matthew 5:3, and some thoughts from Richard Beck in his book Slavery of Death.

6.26 [REFLECTION] Everyone An Icon Series Liturgy
Thursday Jul 07, 2022
Thursday Jul 07, 2022
In last week’s gatherings, we engaged in some practices to help us reflect on what we’ve discussed over the last four weeks. We continued to look at what it means for us to see everyone as an icon specifically in the areas discussed by our teachers this month. We reflected on the series by using the Scriptures we explored each week, followed by some questions, and a prayer.

7.3 [UPDATE] Sabbath Week
Sunday Jul 03, 2022
Sunday Jul 03, 2022
Today at SBCC we did not meet in person, but, instead, took this Sunday as a Sabbath. This allows staff, volunteers, and our community as a whole to rest — in line with our Fields, not Factories mantra. We have compiled a list of “essential” sermons — teachings that heavily influence our life together as a community — and some liturgies for you to listen or process through, in case you were looking for resources to accompany your Sabbath.TeachingsA Different Kind of Conversation About Church and GivingA Sacred Conversation: Rooted Faith, Changing WorldA Sacred Conversation: SexualityBible Rehab: Jesus Centered Book (start at 11:12)

Monday Jun 20, 2022
Dr. Angela Logan - This week in our 4-week series looking at our mantra. "Everyone An Icon," we reflect on the question "What happens when you don't see yourself as an icon?" For some of us, it's easier to see the icon-ness in others than it is to see the icon-ness in the face that greets us in the mirror every morning. Looking at the story of the Apostle Peter, we will reflect on the ways we can learn to see the goodness and Godness in ourselves.
