7.10 [TEACHING] Surprises In the Text (wk. 1): Receiving The Gift of Limits
Monday Jul 11, 2022
Monday Jul 11, 2022
Mike Goldsworthy - Perhaps the American success ethos that drives us to do more, achieve more and work harder as we defy our limits is actually not the best way to live. And perhaps there is a gift and a unique grace that we receive in the recognition, embrace and acceptance of our limits. We look at this through the lens of Hebrews 2:14-15, Matthew 5:3, and some thoughts from Richard Beck in his book Slavery of Death.
Today's teaching comes from Mike Goldsworthy, long time friend of SBCC. Mike is a speaker, resourcer, and guide with a passion for connecting like-minded churches and leaders. He also has a podcast, space for faith: re-imaginging the church for our current moment, and started the Post-Evangelical Collective which met here at SBCC last fall.

6.26 [REFLECTION] Everyone An Icon Series Liturgy
Thursday Jul 07, 2022
Thursday Jul 07, 2022
In last week’s gatherings, we engaged in some practices to help us reflect on what we’ve discussed over the last four weeks. We continued to look at what it means for us to see everyone as an icon specifically in the areas discussed by our teachers this month. We reflected on the series by using the Scriptures we explored each week, followed by some questions, and a prayer.

7.3 [UPDATE] Sabbath Week
Sunday Jul 03, 2022
Sunday Jul 03, 2022
Today at SBCC we did not meet in person, but, instead, took this Sunday as a Sabbath. This allows staff, volunteers, and our community as a whole to rest — in line with our Fields, not Factories mantra. We have compiled a list of “essential” sermons — teachings that heavily influence our life together as a community — and some liturgies for you to listen or process through, in case you were looking for resources to accompany your Sabbath.TeachingsA Different Kind of Conversation About Church and GivingA Sacred Conversation: Rooted Faith, Changing WorldA Sacred Conversation: SexualityBible Rehab: Jesus Centered Book (start at 11:12)

Dr. Angela Logan - This week in our 4-week series looking at our mantra. "Everyone An Icon," we reflect on the question "What happens when you don't see yourself as an icon?" For some of us, it's easier to see the icon-ness in others than it is to see the icon-ness in the face that greets us in the mirror every morning. Looking at the story of the Apostle Peter, we will reflect on the ways we can learn to see the goodness and Godness in ourselves.

6.12 [REFLECTION] The Image Within Us Liturgy
Thursday Jun 16, 2022
Thursday Jun 16, 2022
In this weekends gatherings, before jumping in to week 2 of our “Everyone an Icon” series, we spent some time centering ourselves of the image of God within us. Before we can see the “icon” in others we must first seek to see it within ourselves. Through several songs, a personal story, and Psalm 8 we sought to remind ourselves of who we are in light of the inherent dignity of being human.

Ryan Yazel and David Cramer - Last week we asked the question, "What difference does 'Everyone an Icon' make?" This week we learn through a practical interview about the Christian tradition of nonviolence through with David Cramer, the Pastor of Keller Park Church in South Bend and co-author of "A Field Guide to Christian Nonviolence: Key Thinkers, Activists, and Movements for the Gospel of Peace".

6.5 [REFLECTION] Everyone an Icon Liturgy
Thursday Jun 09, 2022
Thursday Jun 09, 2022
This weekend we spent time reflecting on what it means to live out our Everyone an Icon mantra. Specifically, we think through what this looks like when it comes to those that are different than us or those who we could consider enemies. We do this through quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Loving Your Enemies" sermon, a few songs, and Prayers of the People written for our community.

6.5 [TEACHING] Everyone an Icon: What Difference Does It Make? (wk 1)
Monday Jun 06, 2022
Monday Jun 06, 2022
Ryan Yazel - This week we start a 4 week series looking at our mantra: Everyone an Icon. Today we start with the question, "What difference does it make?", especially as we face a world that presents true evil and oppression at times. We will look at the lives of Jesus followers that lived life in radical ways as a result of their Everyone an Icon convictions and we will dive into the foundations for those beliefs found in Genesis 1 and Matthew 5. Finally, we will reflect on the wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from his sermon "Loving your Enemies".
