2.19 [TEACHING] male and female God created them...
Monday Feb 20, 2023
Monday Feb 20, 2023
Jason Miller - We’re living at time where conversations about gender are everywhere. The subjugation of women in the world and in the Church is being called out. The harmful power of toxic masculinity is being confronted. And the visibility of transgender and nonbinary people is increasing. Alongside all of this, we’re seeing new clashes in matters of public policy. This teaching is an exploration of these conversations, and the questions they raise, within a theological frame.Suggested Reading List/Resources Referenced:The Hebrew Bible (translated by Robert Alter) The Making of Biblical Womanhood (Beth Allison Barr) Jesus and John Wayne (Kristin Kobes Du Mez) From Wild Man to Wise Man (Richard Rohr with Joseph Martos)Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians (Austen Hartke) Paul Among the People (Sarah Ruden)

1.29 [TEACHING] Money Possibilities
Monday Jan 30, 2023
Monday Jan 30, 2023
Dr. Angela Logan - We jumped back in with our series on money, as we focused on Money Possibilities. Because we are icons made in the image of God, we are called to be generous, both individually and collectively, because God is generous. But what does generosity look like, and how can we live in the currents of generosity? This week, we reflect on "The 4 Ts" (Time, Talent, Treasure, and Testimony), to learn from Scripture how God shows up in those areas, and how we can challenge ourselves to show up for our city and the world.
This weekend, we got to hear from Dr. Angela Logan. Dr. Logan is an Associate Teaching Professor and the St. Andre Bessette Academic Director of the Master of Nonprofit Administration in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses on the intersection of gender, race, and nonprofit and philanthropic leadership. She is the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in Philanthropic Studies from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and this past week she was recognized as one of the two inaugural recipients of the Notre Dame Black Excellence Faculty Award.

1.22 [TEACHING] Blessed are Those Who Mourn
Monday Jan 23, 2023
Monday Jan 23, 2023
Jason Miller - We're taking a quick break from our money series. The SBCC family has lost a couple of beloved members through death this week, and so many of us have lost something or someone we cherished over the last few years. Beyond the personal stories of loss, we keep waking up to news like the headlines describing a mass shooting in Monterey Park, CA on Sunday. This weekend, we talked about loss, grief, and hope.
CONTENT WARNING: This teaching includes mention of suicide. If you or someone you know are at risk of self-harm, please call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988. If you are in a medical emergency or suicidal crisis and you cannot connect through 988, please call 911.
